Tanzania is blessed with a wide range of Trade and Service marks which should translate to a big boost to the country's economy and our people's consumption in life. The Trade/service marks includes brand names, symbols, logos, and/or words used by businesses to distinguish their products and services from their competitor’s products and services.
Furthermore, there are many Trade and Service marks such as Coca Cola, ITV, Azam, Serena, Tanesco, Aghakan, Kamaka, ABC Attorneys, Pepsi, Mo Energy, Nike, Bata, Simba, Yanga, Malafin, Tronic, Jeep, Tata, Toyota, WOISO, Mcdonalds, KFC, Tingatinga, Precesion, Abood, Afya, Asas, Tecno, Sumsung, HB (Pencils), CRDB, ABSA, Sony and many more.
Despite this abundance, Tanzania Economic 95% of the businesses in Tanzania are Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and they represent about 35% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to Tanzaniainvest (2018). The sector is dominated by products and services with trade names, logo, words, symbols, Trade & Service marks.
According to Tanzania's Development Vision 2025, the SMEs sector is projected to contribute at least 27 per cent of the country's GDP by the year 2025. That is a proof that most of the trademark products and service marks are yet to be exploited.
The political good will in Tanzania on Trade & Service marks is an important aspect that we are required to capitalize in and promote our Intellectual Property (IP). The government through its Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA) has proposed to establish Trade & Service marks offices in almost all zonal regions this is to enhance registration and ease protection of trademarks by bringing services close to owners. This is actually a positive thinking in this sector.
However, to support the government initiative DEMO Innovators Ltd has prioritized and embarked on establishing Tanzania Trademark Festival (TTF) to promote utilization of trademarks and increase awareness to the public including consumers of products/services in Tanzania through the exhibitions.
The principal of business operation produces variety of products/services containing trademarks or service marks that should be applied with more innovative ideas in Intellectual Property like having a branded mark that could distinguish his products and services from her competitors by offering a monopoly right in the market. Thus, it’s very important for customer and consumers to distinguish the producers, their products/service and where they are located by the use of trade/ service mark.
